Bottom-up shared-flat cooperatives
for a more sustainable
and resilient housing future in Hungary
Petra Horogh and Bence Komlósi
NHR Colloquium - Abstract

In a healthy housing market the State, for-profit developers and not-for-profit communities are the three stakeholders. In Hungary, housing developments are implemented by the State and for-profit developers. For a democratic and affordable housing solution, involving non-profit initiatives would be very important.
The lack of bottom-up, affordable and non-profit housing developments, the high ratio of home ownership and the low ratio of rental stock are the main characteristics of housing problems in many European countries. Hungary, with its young democratic society, still does not have bottom-up housing initiatives which could influence the housing market.
Bottom-up initiated shared-flat cooperatives could be the third party in the housing market to create more affordable homes. These non-profit communities with self-management and a shared ownership structure could react to the current housing crisis and could develop a more sustainable and resilient housing future in Hungary.
